New Opportunities on the Heat Pump Horizon

Sep 22, 2020

NEEA research shows that the NW Ductless Heat Pump Project, in partnership with regional utilities, has contributed to meaningful transformation in the residential ductless market. There are still significant market transformation opportunities remaining in the broader heat pump market:

  • Advanced cold-climate performance systems are readily available in the market
  • The new test procedure currently in development provides a more accurate prediction of the real-world performance of heat pump systems
  • Recent studies have identified improved practices for system design and installation
  • New technologies are emerging that can perform self-commissioning and allow installers to remotely diagnose equipment issues

The Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) began engaging in many of these opportunities through the NW Ductless Heat Pump Project. We plan to build on this work to improve efficiency and accelerate adoption of heat pumps with central forced air applications, replacing less efficient single-speed heat pumps and electric furnaces. Our organization expects these market transformation efforts to continue benefitting the market for all heat pump applications, including ductless heat pumps.

We are excited to continue engaging the region in the coming months to define a new program that will address these new opportunities and build on the transformative work we and our utility partners have accomplished through the NW Ductless Heat Pump Project.
